Transmission Gaps Force Solar Curtailment as Cabinet Clears Green Energy Corridor III
India held back 8,133 GWh of solar in April–June; the ₹1.86 lakh crore GEC-III scheme aims to ease grid bottlenecks.
India curtailed 8,133 GWh of solar power during the April–June quarter as the grid struggled to absorb output, the renewable energy ministry told Parliament, citing transmission delays and grid-security requirements. Monthly curtailment peaked at 3,235 GWh in May.
The problem persisted into the monsoon months. A CREA analysis reported by ETEnergyWorld found that about 4.2% of solar generation went unabsorbed in July and August, even as peak demand reached 270 GW.
On the policy side, the Union Cabinet approved Phase III of the Green Energy Corridor scheme on September 30 with an outlay of ₹1,86,405 crore, aimed at building out the transmission needed to evacuate renewable power. Faster transmission build-out and more battery storage are seen as the main levers to reduce curtailment.
