India Installs 35.2 GW of Solar in First Nine Months of 2026
Utility-scale projects led additions with 24.4 GW, while rooftop contributed 9.8 GW, according to JMK Research data.
India commissioned roughly 35.2 GW of solar capacity between January and September 2026, a rise of about 19.5% over the same period last year, based on figures compiled by JMK Research.
Utility-scale plants made up the bulk of the additions at around 24.4 GW. The pace, however, slowed through the year: about 12.1 GW came online in the first quarter, 6.9 GW in the second and 5.4 GW in the third.
Rooftop solar had a strong run, adding nearly 9.8 GW and taking cumulative rooftop installations to about 33.4 GW by the end of September. Gujarat remained the top state for new capacity, followed by Rajasthan and Maharashtra.
Total renewable capacity in the country stood at about 299 GW at the end of September, with solar making up roughly 57% of it. JMK expects a further 10–12 GW of combined solar and wind in the October–December quarter, which would push calendar-year solar and wind additions past 50 GW.
